What Instructors Do

become-an-instructorInstructors are on the frontlines of the program and help to train people in their communities in Mental Health First Aid. Certified instructors are required to teach the course at least three times per year. Instructors teach from a national curriculum, tailor discussions to their participants, and compile a list of local resources for help.

How to Get Certified as an Instructor

Instructor certification results from a 5-day training that presents the Mental Health First Aid 8-hour course and provides in-depth instruction on facilitating the course. The training includes a written exam and evaluates each candidate’s ability to present the 8-hour Mental Health First Aid course to a variety of audiences. Get certified to teach the adult or youth curriculum, or both.

Certification Process

Continuing Education

The 5-day adult instructor training certification program is approved by the National Association of Social Workers (Approval #886615104-1416) for 32 social work continuing education contact hours. The instructor training is also approved by NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals, for 32.0 CEUs. Additional continuing education opportunities are pending.

Who Trains Instructors?

Mental Health First Aid USA is managed, operated, and disseminated by the National Council for Behavioral Health, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and the Missouri Department of Mental Health. Only these three authorities can train and certify instructors. Our experienced trainers are designated to instructor trainings offered across the country at select dates and times or in response to custom arrangements.

Maintaining Certification

Once certified, instructors must teach the course at least three times per year to maintain their certification. Mental Health First Aid USA will provide ongoing technical assistance and marketing support to certified instructors to help them disseminate the 8-hour course in their communities. For full details on obtaining and maintaining certification, see our certification standards.
